The Peer Pressure Got To Me
I have a friend who, for the last eight years, has asked me every November, “Hey Ron, are you doing NaNoWriMo?” I usually respond with something witty like, “No, but your mom is doing the 82nd Airborne! BOOM!” That doesn’t make anyone in the discussion laugh but me, and once again, I’m reminded that my friends have ambition and drive, while I have just enough energy to croak out, “More weight,” as I crumple helplessly beneath a pile of stuff I need to be writing about, but don’t feel like writing about.
The cool kids are all doing NaNoWriMo or NaBloPoMo this year. Cool kids like my aforementioned friend, Holly, and Newscoma. I may as well join in, too. Hell, it’s not as if I’m not blogging pretty much every day anyway. This little personal blog doesn’t get much love anymore, and I’ve been wanting to correct that lately. I figure now’s as good a time as any, right?
The best part of this whole thing is the fact that my post announcing my intentions to join NaBloPoMo actually counts as my first post! One down, 29 to go! The hard part is over! Now the REALLY hard part begins! At least I don’t have to crack 50,000 words in 30 days like those suckers in NaNoWriMo have to. (Though I may get close to it anyway, given how I intend to continue to blog twice daily at Shaktronics and PopFi while still contributing to Den of Geek and SportsBastards.)
As Prof. Frink once said, “Let the commencement beginulate!”
Yeah, I’m not even going to pretend that I’ll ever do NaNoWriMo. This seemed doable, though, and it’s coming at a good time for me. I’m glad you’re doing it too.
Yeah, I’ve been interjecting more of my personal feelings on stuff into work blogs, which I figure isn’t bad, but also not good either. Maybe I can get my election frustration out here, rather than over on PopFi.
I may have bitten off more than I can chew here.
Trying to honor first-person horror novels.
Fuck.
Keep in mind that it’s only a first draft, Coma. Just get your story out of you, then worry about whether or not it honors first-person horror novels. You can make it good in drafts 2-8.
